Ophelia Winter is a Daughter of Bathory, a woman imbued with supernatural abilities and fiendish desires by a parasite hosted inside her body. A cult of men, known as Pales, serve her, beguiled by the blessing she imparts upon them. The parasite keeps Ophelia young, but she must extract a dying worm and replace it with a more vital one from time to time, giving her immortality. This time of transference is at hand, but her domination of her hive of Pales has weakened, and thoughts of revolution stir among the men.

Meanwhile, Neva Mulroney struggles with the return of her mother, a heroin addict that disappeared two years earlier. Her mother's return causes strife among the family, but is also met with drastic retribution from a local dealer that she unwittingly wronged. As the family is endangered by their matriarch's ties to the drug world, Neva finds herself thrown into Ophelia's struggle as well, and is given a choice that will forever change all of their lives.

Daughter of Bathory edition by AR Wise Literature Fiction eBooks

I'm a huge A.R. Wise fan! I've read all of his Deadlocked Series (plus Broken Pieces 1&2) and both 314 books. A.R. has been telling his fans on FB for quite some time now about this new book he was working on called, Daughter of Bathory. He's been teasing us quite a bit (in typical A.R. fashion) with little bits of information. We were told many times over that this book is unlike anything he's every written before. He mentioned that this is the darkest horror story he's ever attempted and that there is quite a bit of gore, violence, sex, and drugs. He, most certainly, did not exaggerate one bit! It has been many MANY years since I've read anything quite like this. I've been a big Stephen King fan ever since I started sneaking my brothers books when I was about 10 years old. He is the reason I love the horror genre as much as I do. For me, no one comes even slightly close to being able to do with a story what King can do. The minute I was finished reading Daughter of Bathory, my first thought was "Look out Stephen King! A.R. Wise just raised the bar for horror!" I don't like to compare authors because each has their own voice and their own style but after spending 25+ years believing that there is only one "master of horror", it's hard not to compare them a little! A.R. has an incredibly unique way of describing scenes so that you truly feel the pain, the torment, the suffering, the emotions.....you feel it as though it really is happening to you! I can't tell you how often I caught myself holding my breath or cringing as I read some of the more gory scenes in the book. With all of that being said, let me tell you a little bit about this story.

First we have Ophelia, a Daughter of Bathory, who is probably the utmost horrific and evil character to ever be written into a novel. She shows no mercy. She controls everyone around her and loves every second of it. She is the epitome of evil and will torture anyone who stands in her way. No one is safe in Winter Manor in the clutches of Ophelia.

Next we have the "Pales". These are the unfortunate men who live only to serve their queen. They will do anything (and I mean anything) to please her and be noticed by her. The favored Pale is Andrew. He gets the pleasure of being the closest to Ophelia and is at her side to do whatever it is that she needs and he is also the one to give the other Pales the queens orders (if she's not doing so herself). Andrew feels honored to be the favored Pale until he realizes just how sick and twisted his "lady" is.

Finally there is the Mulroney family. The Father just adores his children and will do anything for them. Their mother, Pauline, is a heroin addict that just up and disappeared for 2 years and is just now making an appearance for the first time since leaving. The Father and the 4 children (all adults now) have supported each other endlessly and have all put on their "happy masks" while dealing with Pauline and all the problems she brings along with her. Neva and Hayden (fraternal twins) have had the hardest time dealing with the situation and have been "handling" it in other ways. Neva has a deep dark secret that only she knows and is struggling between trying to find herself and dealing with not having a mother in her life.

Through a series of events, Neva and her brothers end up attending an extravagant party at Winter Manor which is hosted by Ophelia herself. At first, they feel lucky to be there but it doesn't take long for Neva to realize that there's something very strange about their Hostess.

If you're a fan of A.R. Wise, I urge you to read this book. It is unlike anything he's ever written. This book is meant for adults only and people that aren't bothered by gore. If you aren't sure that this is your "cup of tea" , I would suggest giving it a try and keeping an open mind. By the time you've finished I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the great tale Wise has woven for his fans!! This is, by far, the absolute best book I've read in a very very long time!! Great job A.R.! Keep them coming! I'm ready for more!! :-)

Daughter of Bathory edition by AR Wise Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Usually when I give a book five stars, I don't post a message as to why. It's only with bookw I hated that I do. I feel negative reviews carry more weight than positive ones.
But I feel I must here. I started my journey with A.R. Wise through Deadlocked (Give it a read if you haven't already!) and made my way here. This was an amazing journey.
I don't put a lot of faith into indie authors because most books are a jumble of spelling errors, grammar errors, plot holes, and general bad themes that don't pan out. So I was shocked to discover Wise is an indie author.
On to the book.
I always loved twists on the Bathory tale and this book does not disappoint. The parallels between drugs and the Erzebet worm are amazingly well done. The story flows well with nice expositional breaks that don't drag on for too long. And Skulls/Neva is an amazing character that a lot of people can relate too. The true tale of the story, revenge, doesn't pan out for any of the characters and I feel that's a good lesson to have. It's mixed in well with the blood and sex so reader's don't feel they're being beaten over the head with it.
The plot twists were done right with enough hints that reading through a second time, you can find them, but hidden enough so that when the twist hits, it hits.
The sense of good and evil is skewed in the tale so the reader will flip between who they're rooting for. Wise has a habit off killing off loved characters, so always remember that no one is safe. But our true hero always makes it to the end. It may not be the protagonist, it may not be the side-kick. But the real hero of the story survives, I promise ;)
All in all, a magnificent read. I can't wait to read more about these characters. Just as I can't wait for the next Among The Fallen to come out (Wise please. I need it like Pauline needs her heroin. Too soon?) You won't be disappointed, unless you hate blood, gore, and sex. Then you might be a bit disappointed.
Wow! What a story and definitely NOT for the squeamish or those who blush at a book with sex in them. As a fan of AR Wise's other books....the Deadlocked series and the 314 series I couldn't wait for this one to be released. The story jumps right into the blood and gore in the first chapter and gives you a feel of what is to come in the book! Yes my friends....Mr. Wise has written a true tale of horror that will have you cringing as you read the what goes on within the walls of Winter Manor and cringe you will!
Ophelia Winters...is a sex crazed...sadistic and twisted woman and also a Daughter of Bathory who gets her powers and immortality from the Erzsebet Cadger, a parasite, that is nestled deep inside of her. Her Pales or servants cater to her every whim no matter how deviant it is so they can be close to her and receive a "Blessing" from her. In order to keep her powers she must exchange the Cadger when it starts to become weak. The powers she receives can vary depending on what the Cadger gives her. Yes...Ophelia will do ANYTHING to keep her powers including murder. And murder she does do!
There is so much involved in this story from the sadistic Ophelia to a mother who is addicted to heroin who will do anything for a fix and her poor family who would do anything to get the wife and loving mother back from the trough's of drugs to the ever faithful favored Pale of Ophelia's, Andrew. Ahhh...poor Andrew...what he endures for his Lady!
Yes my friends...this is a true nightmare for all involved and one that you do not want to miss! That is of course...you have a very strong stomach and are not adverse to blood...gore and so many other indescribable horrors that will stay with you...even after that last page is turned!
Thank you Mr. Wise for another amazing story that I have totally devoured in a very short time and that I have truly enjoyed.
